Coleman Haynes: The Tale of Truckee Episode 1

“If you had ever wished Harry Potter had a huge set of balls, shaded his way through Hogwarts and was sent in 1860’s wild wet California, this then is the book for you.”
After reading this first line of the book description I was like, yes this must be the book for me because that sounds awesome…. But please do not be fool this book is nothing like Harry Potter, there is no magic, no wizards nothing truly that ties this book in any way to the Harry Potter series. After saying that was I disappointed with this book? Nope, not at all, well I guess since it didn’t have to do with Harry Potter, but really this is an awesome book. I will say this book is not for the faint at heart since it is a very raw book. The language is abrasive, and there is a lot of death, and I mean A LOT OF DEATH! The deaths and mutilations are very graphic so for those bother by this might want to avoid this book because its everywhere in this book, also women in this book are treated like second class citizens, which is true to this time period, but they are also beaten and raped so if this is a trigger for you too this also avoid. There are also some slivers of homophobia in the book too, but again it is appropriate for the time period the book is set in.
I know this review doesn’t sound like I am giving this book high marks or that it is even that good with all the death, gore, and raping and such, but really I enjoyed the read. It was fast paced, and it kept me on my toes guessing the whole freaking time, literally the whole book! Every time I felt that I had it figured out they would kill another character and bam I’m back wondering. Characters you would feel would never be killed or you felt were vital to the storyline ….. BAM DEAD.
Also have to commend the author, he did an amazing job at the descriptions, I felt like I was in Truckee California with all the characters, the scenery, the actions and even the deaths were all described so fantastically.
So in Conclusion, this book is not for everyone no, some will be bothered by the language, the treatment of women and foreigners, the deaths and/or mutilations, but if you keep an open mind that this is set in the 1860s when these people were actually treated like this and just read the story for the story itself you will find you really love it. So I personally give it 5 out of 5. Also this is book 1 so there will be more, meaning that not all questions are answered in this novel, and you are left with a small cliffhanger.

I Will Find Her by Thomas Apostle

I can not give this book enough praise, this is an amazing work of literature. This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster. You will fall in love, you will laugh, you will have your heartbroken, and you will want revenge just like Thomas.

This is a story told by an 81 year old man, Thomas Benson, in what is suppose to be his last hours on earth, he is on death row for murder and is scheduled to be executed at 6 am the following morning. Thomas decides in his final hours to tell his story, since he states he is not even sure he committed the murder, but he wanted to and he wants to die in order to be reunited with the love of his life. This story may seem not the unique, but I feel it is, not I guess in the plotline but in how it is presented. Thomas tells his story to a mouse that he names Cecil, and I will tell you that by the end of the novel you will want a Cecil. As well as I feel the author did an amazing job at capturing the characters themselves, one prime example would be the fact that the story is told primarily from the point-of-view of an 81 year old man, people of this age many times when telling stories get sidetracked and this happens which to me gives the story even more realness.

Truthfully I have to criticism with this book, I feel it was very well written, organized, characters had dimension, and the author placed plot twists in the perfect places so that it made the book not so predictable, but there is a degree of predictability since it is a character retelling his story. Since I did state I had no real criticisms with the book, if I could change anything would I? Maybe, and that would be the ending when it dealt with Thomas' daughter and grandkids. Otherwise no I think all actions had reasons and were presented perfectly.

In conclusion, I give this a 5 out of 5! highly highly recommend! this is a book that will stick with you, it will have thinking about morality, death, and religion. I will make you think about what you would have done in his situation, and make you wonder was God present and talking to him, and will make you also question what lies after death.....

Escape to Death by Stephen Perkins

I will start off by say this is a very very long book that is not a quick easy read. There is so much that goes on in this story, from political corruption to zombies to witchcraft and voodoo.... pretty much everything is in this book. I will also say that the author is able to weave together multiple storylines with lots of shock and awe that will keep any reader on their toes and guessing how it all will end. this guessing goes all the way up to pretty much the very last page. the book is also written very well, but I will say that some of the storylines it did have me wondering what their point was in the full scheme of the novel, and now that I have finished it I still feel that some of the people and their stories were not needed and just took up space unnecessarily. I also feel like there was too much going on, like stated above you have so many things going on that some things were not explained and given proper spotlighting that it deserved, this felt like this one book should have been broken up into multiple ones, a series. Also, with having things like witches and warlocks and zombies and corrupt business men, corrupt politicians, and so much more as a reader you don't really know who is the bad guys and who are the good ones, and those that you think are good turn out be bad or die. Just so much of so many things.

In conclusion, I give this a 3 out of 5. If it had been condensed more, the unnecessary storylines and people removed so that there could be more suspense and more focus on the true storylines and people it would have been a fantastic book. One that would be hard to put down and could have sparked a new series and a new hero.

RAGE AND MERCY: PART ONE BY SCOTT DRESDEN

Did I enjoy this novel? Yes, very much. Is this novel for everyone? No. The reason I say this is not because the story is lacking in anyway because it is the exact opposite, the amount of content the author was able to fit into such few pages without the storyline feeling rushed, I feel shows how well written the story is and the skill level of the author. The author fully develops all characters, giving each a detailed backstory even characters as a reader you would see as secondary or filler character. Giving the reader a full look into the motivations of each character. I say that this novel may not be for everyone is the overall topic of the story and the events featured. The story is very graphic, in everyway you can possible think. For example, the details mentioned above are not exclusive to the character descriptions, but he also describes in full detail everything from conversations between Diana and Sayer to the murders and mutilations of the illegals and the fiends. So for those that are weak at heart, and stomach, or are easily upset or offended probably should not read this book.

I personally feel that the subjects brought up in this novel are controversial but brilliantly covered, this book is one that will make you as a reader think, since these events do happen in real life, and most are not covered on out evening news so if you are not one living it you may not even know it is happening, able to live happily in your little bubble, which this "bubble" is also discussed in this novel, which discusses the government covering it up to keep certain people happy in their "bubble". I also love how the author approaches human interaction, interaction between rich and poor, interaction between the public and the homeless, drug fiends, and so many other types.

This novel flows so well, the author puts such detail into events and conversations, but even with all the detail the flow never gets monotonous. Everything flow perfectly into the next thing, to the point you can be reading for what may only feel like a few minutes but you look down and you have read half the book. I will also say that this is a "Book One", so you are left with a somewhat cliffhanger. 5 out of 5 all the way, will definitely be checking out book two!

END OF THE LAST GREAT KINGDOM (THE BRIMSTONE CHRONICLES #1) BY VICTOR ROSE

I really enjoyed this book, I loved how it combined the magic and fantasy of seen in books like Harry Potter with the blood, gore and battles seen in books like Game of Thrones. The overall premise of the book is a race war and young mage "Brimstone" that is the key to ending it. The characters in this book are highly developed, you get their fully backstory and learn what makes them act they way they do. The book is over 300 pages and it just book one in the saga, so even the smallest of characters you are given a little bit of a backstory on them so there is no filler characters each has a specific reason for being in the story. The setting is highly detailed as well and this is very important since the characters are pretty much always traveling.

If you are a fan of harry potter, but wanted something way more mature then you will like this novel, but I will say that some may not like this novel since it is VERY similar to harry potter, the first basic similarity is the group, Brimstone, Heat and Neutron.... which as you can see is three just like Harry, Ron and Hermione. Second, both go to magical school, in this book its Central, in Potter is Hogwarts. Third, Brimstone has to search for his fractured soul in order to become strong enough to defeat the order, and in Potter of course he has to locate the different horcrux to defeat the dark lord. But I will say the similarities do end pretty much there and that is because this story is a lot more mature than HP ever was since there is so much death in this book, and the deaths are very detailed and very gory. You have people stabbed in throats, peoples limbs being cut off, and oh you can forget the rotten corpses.

So even though this book is focused around young teens, like 13 years old, this book is probably not the best for kids of that age. But as an adult if you wanted a more mature harry potter then this is definitely the book for you.

The only real problem I had with the book, is that sometime the different characters and locations can get muddled and confusing of who is who since in the novel peoples name change as they take on new roles so it can be confusing to remember whose storyline you are reading about and the characters travel a lot and they often go to new places and then to places they have already been so the picture of the land gets confusing, so it would be awesome if the author had included a map at the beginning so you could tell the distances between places described in the characters travels. Time is another one that gets a bit confusing, since it is said to take weeks to get somewhere but then two pages later they are there, but the author will then use 10 pages to describe on day event, so dates would have been nice to.

So overall I would give this novel a solid 4 out of 5 stars, And I an definitely looking forward to reading the other novels in this series to see what becomes of Brimstone and all the other characters.

THE REDEMPTION OF CHARLIE MCCOY BY CD WILSHER

This is an action packed, sitting on the edge of your seat story from the first page to the last page. I will say this is definitely not a short book by no means but the author does an amazing job of structuring the story in a way that as a reader you do not notice the length or really even mind the length. Many stories will have its upbeat, fast paced parts but also have those parts that are slow and kind of unimportant to the storyline, I can say I did not find this happening in this story, all parts in the end are shown have a reason for being placed where they were.

I also loved how the author was able to switch between each character storyline with each new chapter without the reader having any confusion of whose storyline they were reading at that point, which I found as an issue with books that have as many different storylines as this one does.

The author does a great job also at making sure each character is complex with their own unique back story, which yes is one reason that the story is as long as it is. Yet I will say that even with the degree of detail, everything presented had a reason for being there and did not drag the story down at all, it just added to it.

The beginning I will also say and a few other parts throughout the story (especially the gore factor) reminded me a lot of Quinton Tarantino movies, and as speaking as a huge Tarantino fan this was a major major plus!

If I had to say anything negative about the book or anything I would change, first would be there were some words that I found misspelled, so maybe a little more carefulness in editing. Also, this book is a prime example of not judging a book by its cover. The cover currently is very plain and I feel for how much action is in this story it is to plain and maybe people would pass over it without ever actually trying to find out what the book is about. Need to be more attention grabbing, maybe even have more to actually do with the story itself.

So in conclusion, I highly highly highly recommend this book. 5 out of 5 stars all the way!

SEXUAL POETRY - IT'S JUST WOW! BY SIMPLY MYLOVPOET

Sexual Poetry: It’s Just – WOW! Is the first book in the set of three books of poetry about romance and sex. I actually read “Erotic Poetry”, which is book two in the series first, and I will say I am glad I did read that book first, reason is that I really did NOT enjoy that book I felt that it had very little if anything at all that was erotic. So I believe if I read this book first and then went to read the second I would have been highly disappointed, more so than I am now. This set of poems were much better and actually lived up to its title. Would I say it is “WOW” like the title? No…. but that is really for nit-picky reasons, such as I felt that the single male point of view in the poems after reading so many became monotonous and boring. I also feel like some of the poems themselves would start of great and have this amazing imagery but then would end with a cheesy one liner that would ruin it all. As well as the author’s use of slang terms for private parts and even the cuss words used took away from the poems themselves, some even made the poems feel humorous when they were supposed to be serious and libido inducing. In the “Erotic Poetry” book I actually commended the use of technology in that it made the poems feel more modern and helped a younger audience connect to the poems. In this book the author also used these technological items, for example he mentions a Samsung S3 specifically in one poem, but this time it did the exact opposite and again made the poem go from creative to cheesy in literally one word.

I will say though that the book is 155 pages which gives you around 70 or more poems and for the eBook copy it was only $3.99, so I do feel it is a good value for the amount of book you are getting. I also did find pretty much all of the poems to be entertaining and also pretty hot too. So to rate this book I would give it a good 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Erotic Poetry: Grab Romance by the Butt by Simply Mylovepoet

The word Erotic is defined as something “relating to or tending to arouse sexual desire or excitement”. The reason I feel it is important to start the review off with this definition is the fact that the title of this book is Erotic Poetry, so it should be poetry that arouses sexual desire and/or excitement, yet in the 60 or so poems that are in this novel none did this in my opinion. Some of the poems in the book do not even have anything to do with sex or romance; they speak of troubles and trials of the time. One poem is to me the exact opposite of erotic since it takes of a woman withholding sex from her partner and how he is suffering because of it…. How is that erotic? Just because it talks of sex does not make it erotic. The majority of the poems that are not talking of the times and trial are more romantic… ones that talk of fluttering hearts and kisses. The one poem in the book that I feel does actual capture the erotic theme is “Honeymoon Couple”.  Now, if we forget about the title of the book and let’s say there was no description other than this is a book of poems, and then I would say the poems are very well written, many have great rhythm that really elevates the meanings behind the words.  Which this adds to the book being an enjoyable read, the book is only around 123 pages so it can be read fairly fast, as well as the poems themselves are easily understandable which is nice. The poems also have a modern feel, some talk of current inventions like the internet, texts, e-mails, and chat rooms. This to me also adds to them being easily understandable and relatable to the modern generation and makes it unlike the insufferable books of poetry that we are made to read and dissect in school. Someone can read the poem and understand its meaning and point, but it also is open for further inspection if warranted. So in general I would say I give this book a 2 1/2 out of 5 stars. The reason I give this novel this low of rating is for a few reason, first the price, this book is only as I said only around 123 pages and a book this small in e version cost $5.99 and to me that is a little steep for such a small book. Secondly, the falsehood of the title, because if you are someone that buys based on title and you are think you are about to get some poems to get you all hot and bother or to whisper in your significant others ear to get them in the mood, you will be very disappointed as I was. I give it two stars because the poems are not bad when they are looked at on their own and they are easily understood and read, and there could also be a miscommunication of what erotic means in American culture versus others parts of the world.

SURVIVOR BY SAMANTHA K. DUKE

I will just start off by saying I really did enjoy this book, but just a heads up it is a young adult novel that is set in high school. So that is the target audience, but there is enough drama, action and comedy to keep the attention of those that are unfortunately no longer young adults, but at the same time it should not be held to the standards of adult mystery/horror writers.
The basic premise of this novel is like a combination of Revenge of the Nerds meets Case of the Body Snatchers, this is due to the fact that is set in high school around a group of freshmen misfits that are constantly being picked on by the “popular” kids, but when a group of spirits, that suck the life out of kids in the high school and sometimes even enter then in order to stay in existence, come into the school these misfits save the day. Most of the target age audience probably would not get these references so that is another part that does make it enjoyable for older audiences.
Another part that I highly enjoyed was each of the characters themselves, each has his or her own unique personalities and quirks, but at the same time these quirks play off each other for some very funny moments.
One thing I would change about this book those was plot development. I really wished the author would have made it a bit more suspenseful by drawing out some of the more tense moments, it seems that so much was focused on the characters and the beginning that the ending felt a bit rushed, but other than that I feel this is a really great book.

Exiles: A Mystery In Paris by Lawrence J. Epstein

The basic premise of this story is about a young man named Daniel that is fresh out of the war, where he saw many horrible things that have forever changed him. After the war he decides to go to Paris to become a writer. Arriving with very little money he luckily meets and become friends with a book shop owner who gives him a job, money and a place to live. Also on his first day in Paris there is a murder of the owner of a local literary magazine, and from this you find out that Daniel is very perceptive and is pushed to solve the crime, but he does not want to because to do so would mean he has to face his worst memory.

When it comes to the story itself, I have to say it is one of the most beautifully written stories I have read in a while. The language is reminiscent to a beloved classic novel by a great author from our past. But just because a novel is beautifully written does it make it worth reading? Personally I find this novel to be just so-so, meaning the plot of the story is good, but the execution not so much. The author mentions how many people go to Paris to write because they know their way around words, but lack the skill to properly write a story, and many times I felt that this statement rang true for this story.  The author is very repetitive in the story, with Daniel complaining how he cannot write but does not want to do anything else. Those in the literary community around him try to tell him that he is not good enough to be a writer so he should work with his strengths and investigate the murder, but he does not want to do that he wants to write yet he cannot. Just round and a round and a round. Spoiler though…. He does end up investigating the murder.

The story is also very long, especially considering how little happens in it. So in conclusion, I like the language the author uses and the basic plot, but I wished it was shorter and had more meat to the plot itself and the fat of the repetitiveness cut out. So I would rate this a 2.5 or 3 out of 5.

Severed Threads by: Kaylin McFarren

I really enjoyed this book, to me it has a little bit of everything for all readers. It has lies, deceit, romance, treasure hunting, fighting, and of course some good ole lovin hehe. I also have to say the author does an amazing job at capturing the readers attention from the very beginning and keeps it, which is very difficult, but she does it with ease by giving little hints into the mysteries of the novel, and not giving too much away at one time like I have experienced before with many writers. I will say some may not enjoy how the writer ends pretty much every chapter with a very small cliffhanger, making very difficult to stop reading. This book also gives the reader some back stories of legends that also are extremely entertaining and there is also a ghost element that I liked since it did not come off as being cheesy or too farfetched, but I do like the paranormal stuff so forewarning that there is this element since some may not like it.

Ratings wise I would give this a 4 out of 5 stars..... wait what? Didn't I just say I loved the book?!? Why only 4 stars?!? The reason for this is the one negative I have with this novel and that is the ending to me feels rushed and things not fully explained. Like there is a scene where you find out Rachel has a stalker, and that whole situation is ever fully explained, you find out that the dude is married but stalking her and doesn't want his wife to find out.... and this left me like "huh?". Then Allie's miraculous recovery goes unexplained, but the biggest is after the bog ending fight is weird and feels rushed and confusing. As well as I will say the "cliffhangers" I raved about so much at the beginning of the review does muddle some of the ending and does at first cause some confusion that can upset the reader, since you read Chase is pulled from the ocean and is alive, but then a few pages later the author confuses you when Rachel overhears by the police that another captain has been claimed. If the ending was developed more then this would definitely be a 5 out of 5.
Also this is volume 1, so there will (hopefully) be more coming in this series and in the epilogue it does end with the promise of a new exciting adventure, but also note that most things are explained and wrapped by to the point you could read this as a stand alone novel, so for those not into series you can still enjoy this novel too.

I truly can not wait to see what the next volumes bring and to see how each character develops, especially the rekindled romance between Chase and Rachel.

A RANDOM TRAVELER BY LEO GETZ

As you can probably assume from the title this book is about a guy traveling to random places all over the world, and as the author points out in the preface the book is not written entirely in the same manor. The first half of the book is in a dairy style cataloging his daily events and thoughts, then it changes and you get a quick 30 say summation, and it then changes again the author goes into describing this time at different locations.

Now for what I though of the book, well 110 percent complete honesty, the first half of this book I hated, there is no other way to say than that, I almost did not finish it because of the beginning.
Why? Well first half was like a sponsorship advertisement for contik tours, like something you would read to find out all the things you get to do and see if you buy one of their tour packages, which to me is not a novel I want to spend money on. Then it got worse in the fact that the author was very immature, he made crude jokes about the people on the tour with him and the natives of the places he visited. For example, there was a girl who had a great body but not so great in the face so of course he made the "butterface" joke, then there was the man who smelled and he had to write about that a ton, and the worse was when described the natives as reminding him of people you would see in the home depot parking lot in the mornings looking for work. I just hated the fact that the author was visiting some of the most beautiful places fill of such great history and culture, and instead of giving the reader an inside look at these places, something that you wouldn't get from a advertisement, you get childish jokes and just harsh judgemental stories.

BUT.... I will say it gets better....

THANK GOD lol.....

Once the author switches formatt you do get that inside look and you learn about these places finally, I loved his description of Qatar and the boat ride to Daydream Island. To me the changes in writing style shows a progression in maturity for the author, that this trip in its entirety is him growing up and because of this I really learned to love the book. In the story the author mentions how being away from what most call "civilization" and going to these countries that do not have what we have really makes a person grateful and that to me is again him showing how traveling changed him, matured him, and gave him a deeper connection with life. While he is on Daydream Island he states "So I guess sometimes you have to go out in the middle of nowhere, even to a remote farm where there's nothing to do, the most boring place you can think of, to find excitement" and to me this sums up the book. So in conclusion, the book is of average length and the first half is pretty crappy, but if you just stick with it, it is completely worth it!

The Lady Who Loved Bones By: Jack Hazen

With any review I always like to start by letting the reader know how it was to read the book, so this book is very long and it is not a light easy read. You most likely will not pick up this novel and automatically get wrapped up and engrossed in the plot or imagery and i feel the main reason for this is the fact that it is a story made up of a lot of other stories, to the point it almost reminds you of a textbook. So the basic premise of the book is a woman named Hannah going on an expedition through the west to find dinosaur bones. It is set in the early 1900s so it deals with the issues of the time, like the trials and wars with the native Americans. Hannah is highly educated, so while on the journey she is constantly telling stories about pretty much everything, which is where the textbook factor comes in. At first these tales she tales are neat since they are very informative, but once you get over halfway done with the novel they are still good and informative, but you wish the writer would just get to the freakin' point and let the story itself progress. The author also features full song lyrics in the novel, which I feel it was his way of adding more meaning and depth to the story, since this would be something in a classic novel that in school you would look at the symbolism and write lengthy research papers on, BUT that does not work here since this is not a classic novel written by a world renowned author, so it just adds more length to a story that is already way too long. Also this novel is not for younger audiences for sure since there is lots of sex jokes, racism, and gory torture and when i say gory i mean gory the author goes to great detail of bodily mutilations like scalping and castration. The book also is very repeative, it seem like in the story every night around the camp fire the same conversations happen, you have a preacher who is racist and sexist, so he is constantly telling everyone they are going to Hell and that blacks and women should not be given the right to vote, but then he stays drunk most of the time. Then you have Hex who plays Hannah's somewhat love interest who is constantly making jokes at Hannah about sex, which she tells him she will not do with him unless they are married. Then one member is transgendered, meaning it is a man that dresses, acts, and lives as a woman and the men in the travel party are constantly bringing up and making fun off. So if you were to strip away the "stories" or for me lectures, the repeative crude jokes, the songs, and torture you have a pretty good story that does have enough action to keep the reader interested.

SWEET: BY LISA HAHN

SWEET

BY: LISA HAHN

I will just start out this review by stating for me this book was neither bad nor good, it was just your average romance novel, but with that being said I will explain the pros and cons I see in this books. So to start on a positive note I will say what I liked about this book. First, this is a short simple read, and when I say it is an easy read I am speaking to the fact that it is not a book you have to pay attention to every single word and line in order to keep up with the story, so you can skip over words here and there as many do and you will still understand what is going on with the story. Second, it is a nice romantic story that leaves you with a happily ever after feeling. Third, from what I can tell even though the title of the book states this is the first book in the series this is a standalone novel, so no cliffhangers.
Now for the cons. First the story is completely unoriginal, it is your typical love struggle of girl and boy falling for each other, but cannot be together yet in the end somehow they find a way to make their love work and live happily ever after. So on that same note to me this story line did have a lot of potential that could have been explored but the author failed to do so, instead just gave the reader another typical romance. As well the story surrounds a ballet school, but when the main character Catherine or “Cat” gets her starring role, the first opening performance was complete skipped over and truthfully the aspect of dance is really a backburner topic, that I really wish the author had done more research in and really included that since I feel this would have given the storyline more depth and made it slightly less typical. Then the males lead of the story, Dmitri, also has this backstory that I feel could have been explored that also would have given the storyline more depth. For instance, his accident that derailed his career, the reader is never really told what happened, was it his fault? Was he drinking? Did someone purposefully injure him? These are just a few off the top of my head that could have been question the author asked themselves to give and extra story a little extra, so again it would not be so typical. So in conclusion, if you want an easy read that ends in a happy ending with no cliffhangers, this you will love this book, but if you are not into that and want stories with a little more realism and “meat on their bones” then I would skip it. This is the first book of a series so I am hoping as the author writes and gets into the rhythm of her stories they will improve.

The Lord of Desire

The Lord of Desire

By: L.L. Rideau

Before starting this book there is one very important factor the reader must take into consideration, and that this book is a prequel to a new series by the author entitled “Breaking a Cycle”. This is important since the book is very short, only 95 pages, which makes it extremely hard to get proper character and story development, but since it is only a prequel or more like an introduction to the characters we will learn more about in upcoming full length novels and to provide some background information, it makes it easier to understand the length. The story itself is an enjoyable read, that gives a big build to a climax and resolution that I would say are not as grand as the buildup. The story is your “harlequin romance” type romance novel, which means it has the “perfect happily ever after” ending where the main character, Massey gets her man and maybe a new addition to the family. So in that aspect the novel is predictable, but for an easy read like this it can be nice.

The novel is categorized as an erotic novel, so the next question would be on how does it holds up in that aspect. There are some spicy sex scenes, but very few, the sex scenes do not make an appearance until the book itself its over 60 percent complete, which is a letdown. As well as they are not overly graphic in detail, this is an aspect that again mirrors things typical of harlequin novels. So would I recommend this book? For someone looking for an easy, quick romance to read yes, but if you are someone that really wants to get caught up in the romance and characters, then no , I would just wait for the novels that this is a prequel for to come out.
